Though Paragon features paid content, developer Epic Games assures that the final product will not feature “pay-to-win” mechanics that reward wealthy players. Experience and reputation points also play a role in progression, as players need to rack up a number of wins in order to buy card packs that award randomly distributed items. Players in Paragon earn card points from defeating enemies and capturing towers during battle, which can then be redeemed for mid-match health boosts and other effects. Players pick from one of 16 playable heroes, filling the ranks as tanks, assassins, rangers, casters, and support classes for the duration of each match.

Like competing games in the genre, Paragon pits teams of five players against one another in a series of lane-based, base-capturing battles. Today’s open beta release eases these restrictions, allowing all players to join the fray regardless of whether or not they have purchased previously issued Founder’s Packs, Challenger Packs or Master Packs. Paragon saw an early-access rollout on PCs and the PlayStation 4 earlier this year that required players to pay for entry. Similar to its competitors, Paragon is free to play at a base level, with cosmetic items available as in-game purchases. Gears of War series creator Epic Games has released a free open beta version of its competitive 5v5 MOBA Paragon, giving players an early taste of the action prior to its digital launch later this year. Once it does, it should have a MOBA hit on its hands. The game is currently in open beta, so with any luck, Epic will work out the skill-card/interface issues. The latter is especially nice, since everything - skins, cards, experience and reputation boosts, and silly images (burly warrior hula-hooping, anyone?) - can be earned through gameplay, which means Paragon is truly free-to-play.

The game is still in development, though, and even with the issues, the fun wins out thanks to a beefy tutorial section, satisfyingly visceral attacks, and a store full of fun rewards just waiting to be unlocked. The skill card system is intriguing but, due to an overly complicated, cluttered interface, more of a hindrance than a help during combat. Beyond that, their skills are varied and mostly impressive to use (there are a few underwhelming Ultimate abilities that can be used to give you an advantage in battle). The models are fantastic and get better through alternate skins you can buy or earn. Epic has come up with a diverse group of characters here, from Gears of War-style space marines to sexy goth vampires. The most obvious is its collection of beautiful heroes. The idea is to make MOBAs, popular online match games that can be focused on strategy and tactics, more "epic." Aside from an obscure deck system and cluttered interface, it works. An upgrade-able card/deck system takes the place of the typical item setup, and the usual bird's-eye camera view is swapped for action that's up close and personal. This fast-paced game merges hard-hitting action with a multiplayer online battle arena with explosive results.
